Who We Are

The Oakland Kendo Dojo was established in 1953 by founding members, Hiroshi Umemoto, Gordon Warner, 
Benjamin Hazard, Yoshinari Miyata, Shoichi Fujishima and Seiichi Umemoto.

Over the past 73 years, we have hosted numerous guests, including top Kendo instructors and competitors from across the United States, Japan, and Europe and have taught countless men, women, and children of all ages. Currently, our 60-plus members are guided by Chief Instructor and Senior Advisor of the Northern California Kendo Federation, Tanouye Sensei, Renshi Roku-dan
(6 Dan).

Oakland Kendo Dojo Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and a member of the Northern California Kendo Federation (NCKF) and the All United States Kendo Federation (AUSKF).
